Abstract

Language in 86 (Eighty-Six) is used not only as a means of communication, but also as a tool to determine who is recognized as human and who is excluded from humanity. This study examines the representation of dehumanization and identity reclamation in Volume 1 of the light novel using a descriptive qualitative method and thematic analysis. The data consisted of 52 items taken from selected dialogues and narrations that describe the experiences of the Eighty-Six and their relationship with the Republic of San Magnolia. The data were classified into three main themes: institutional erasure of humanity, normalization and concealment of violence, and identity reclamation and resistance. Among these themes, identity reclamation and resistance was the most dominant, with 20 data items. This theme frequently appears through the efforts of the Spearhead Squadron members to maintain their names, personal memories, solidarity, dignity, and shared identity despite continuous discrimination. The findings also show that institutional language, labels, and military terms are used to reduce the Eighty-Six into objects, tools, and nonhuman beings. However, the characters gradually challenge these labels by reclaiming their identity and asserting their right to live as human beings. Therefore, language in the novel functions both as a tool of oppression and as a means of resistance, recognition, and identity reconstruction.
