Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms, meanings, and communicative functions of Mandarin slang vocabulary used in Weibo users' comments during the semifinal and final matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach using content analysis. The research data consisted of Weibo comments containing slang expressions selected through a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted through the processes of identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing based on the linguistic context of each expression. The findings revealed four major patterns of slang formation, namely semantic metaphors, phonetic puns, slogan recontextualization, and cross-domain lexical borrowing. The semifinal stage was characterized by slang expressions that primarily functioned as forms of appreciation toward players and teams, including 牛逼 (Niúbī), 煤球王 (Méiqiúwáng), and 含金量 (Hánjīnliàng). In contrast, the final match demonstrated a greater tendency toward critical, sarcastic, and mocking expressions, such as 义必胜 (Zhèngyì bìshèng), 点根廷 (Diǎngēntíng), and 清静 (Qīngjìng). The findings indicate that the use of slang in digital communication is strongly influenced by social dynamics, collective emotions, group identity, and changes in competitive situations during sporting events.
